Remembering Martin Luther King Jr. — part 2 of 6
In commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, UNMC Today will feature a series of photos and quotations from the civil rights leader. Today’s excerpt looks at the semantics of being black or white. The series will culminate Jan. 20 at noon with a presentation by Diane Ariza, Ph.D., assistant dean of multicultural affairs at Albion College in Albion, Mich., and former director of multicultural affairs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

New version of LastWord computer system to go live
The LastWord information system will be upgraded in March. The new system is named Carecast. Final plans are underway to implement this new version, which is currently used by NHS, UNMC and UMA.

UNMC studies new drug for multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease
Researchers at UNMC were part of what’s being called a landmark international, 23-center study that tested the safety of the drug natalizumab – also known as Antegren. The drug may benefit those with multiple sclerosis, a neurological disease, and Crohn’s disease, an intestinal disease.

NHS/UNMC to commemorate Martin Luther King Day
Diane Ariza, Ph.D., will be the keynote speaker at the NHS/UNMC 2003 Martin Luther King Holiday Commemoration. Dr. Ariza, assistant dean of multicultural affairs at Albion College in Albion, Mich., and former director of multicultural affairs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, will speak Monday, Jan. 20, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Storz Pavilion in the NHS Clarkson Hospital.

MMI offers aquatic therapy for children with special needs
Beginning this month, UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute will introduce Starfish, a new aquatic therapy-swimming program for children with special needs. Children ages 2 to 4 with developmental disabilities are welcome to participate in the classes, which are led by a physical, occupational and recreational therapist. See story for details.
