The UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff will host open houses next week in Scottsbluff and Alliance. The Panhandle Diabetes Outreach Project in Scottsbluff will be celebrating its one-year anniversary and its grand opening expansion in Alliance.

Broadcast of sinus surgery provides learning opportunities
Surgeons from several states will have the opportunity to learn new skills this weekend during the Second Annual Nebraska Endoscopic Surgery Course, which is focused on sinus surgery. The course, to be led by Donald Leopold, M.D., will take place today and Saturday at UNMC.

Halda’s positive attitude melts away challenges of groundskeeping
Bill Halda won’t say he dislikes winter, even when faced with zero-degree weather and mounds of snow. The man responsible for UNMC’s snow removal admits that winter can be a “challenge” and sometimes gets “tough,” but ask Halda what the hardest part of his job is and with pride he’ll tell you that he loves it all.
For his upbeat attitude and sincere dedication, Halda is this month’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Gold and Silver ‘U’ Awards. Halda is the first person to receive both awards in the same month.

Dr. Armitage’s caricature unveiled at OPC
James Armitage, M.D., made history Feb. 4, but it wasn’t easy. The dean of the UNMC College of Medicine became the first physician to ever be honored with the Omaha Press Club’s most prestigious award — “The Face on the Barroom Floor.” But, to receive this distinction, he had to first endure a vintage 40-minute roasting by five of his UNMC colleagues.

Study examines whether perceived inability to give back in relationship causes self-health neglect
UNMC College of Nursing associate professors Betty Craft, Ph.D., and Sister Carol Grasser, Ph.D., received a $73,500, one-year grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging, to determine whether the inability to reciprocate in a relationship may cause older adults to neglect their health needs.
