UNMC’s RHOP program among top rural development initiatives

The UNMC Rural Health Opportunities Program was named recently as one of the Top 10 Rural Development Initiatives for 2001 by the Nebraska Rural Development Commission.

In recognition of the honor, Gov. Mike Johanns presented a plaque on April 4 to RHOP representatives Dan Chambers, RHEN program coordinator, and Jeanne Bishop, director of special projects for Chadron State College.

College of Nursing Kearney Division to celebrate 25th anniversary April 13

The UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a variety of activities Saturday, April 13. The division, located on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus in the West Center Building, draws nursing students from a 100-125-mile radius around Kearney.

Ice cream social April 18 kicks off UNMC College of Medicine centennial

At the turn of the 20th century, pneumonia was usually fatal and insulin, antibiotics and treatment for high blood pressure didn’t exist. Physicians donated their time teaching in the gas lit College of Medicine and students spent their first two years in Lincoln and the second two in Omaha at the medical school campus at 12th and Pacific Streets — home today to the downtown post office.

Much has changed since April 18, 1902, when the College of Medicine joined the University of Nebraska system.

Dental professor receives National Student Research Mentor Award

UNMC College of Dentistry Associate Professor, Sreenivas Koka, D.D.S., Ph.D., recently received the American Association for Dental Research’s Student Research Group Mentor Award. The award recognizes outstanding faculty members with experience in research and who support student research.

On Monday, members of Nebraskans for Research, UNMC and the Omaha business community gathered to salute philanthropist Charles Durham’s for his contributions to medical research.

“Charles Durham is a true pioneer,” said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D. “He is the one who is moving the frontiers.”

Dr. Jackson receives March Gold ‘U’ award

Some days, Barbara Jackson, Ph.D., plays with brightly colored blocks and shapes, while assessing an infant’s developmental progress. On other days, she meets with adults across the state to evaluate early childhood programs or writes grants for the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s education and child development program.

Each day, however, she makes a difference in the lives of children.

For her commitment and outstanding performance, Dr. Jackson, director of the department of education and child development at MMI, has received the Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award for March. She also serves as associate professor in the department of pediatrics.

NU Board of Regents authorize salary increases at UNMC

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved an operating budget Saturday for the 2002-2003 year. The regents also authorized NU President L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D., to set salary increases at 4 percent at UNMC.

Dr. Mann’s teaching bolstered by studies of the brain

To Michael Mann, Ph.D., professor of physiology and biophysics, teaching is the same no matter who the students are – whether they are in his neurophysiology classes at UNMC or in the elementary science classes where he once volunteered.

Michael Mann, Ph.D., is one of four faculty members who will receive UNMC’s Outstanding Teacher Award Thursday, April 11 at 4 p.m. during the Annual Faculty meeting in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. He is the final award recipient to be profiled in UNMC Today.

April 7 World Health Day focuses on health life styles

April 7 of each year is designated as World Health Day and celebrated by the 191 member countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) to emphasize significant issues in public health of worldwide concern.

World Health Day offers a unique opportunity to raise global awareness of a specific health theme. The theme for World Health Day 2002 (WHD) — Move for Health! — highlights the importance of physical activity and a healthy life style.

April also is Nebraska Public Health Month and Minority Public Health Month in Nebraska.
