Jay Noren named university provost

University of Nebraska President L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D., has named Jay Noren, M.D., executive vice president and provost effective on or about July 1.

Noren (pronounced Nor-een), 57, has been director of the Health Workforce Project for the National Institute of Health Policy in Minneapolis since January 2001. He is a professor in the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, and a professor of family and community medicine in the College of Medicine in the Texas A&M University System.

Kelli Gibson wasn’t too surprised when six national awards went to the UNMC chapter of the Academy of Students of Pharmacy. But, when the UNMC student chapter received the Division AAA chapter achievement award, Gibson was floored.

UNMC’s Beck remembers the forgotten client

Today’s UNMC Today includes a reprint of an article Gary Beck, education administrator in UNMC’s department of pediatrics, published in the fall 2001 edition of the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing “Notes” newsletter. Beck serves as an interpreter and activist for the Deaf community.

Dr. Binhammer receives 2001 Alvin Earle Award

While his classroom challenges may give some a headache, Robert Binhammer, Ph.D., always prepares his students to succeed in the medical field.

On Friday, UNMC students recognized the educational contributions of Dr. Binhammer, professor and vice chairman of UNMC’s genetics, cell biology and anatomy department, by awarding him the 2001 Alvin Earle Outstanding Health Science Educator Award for exemplary teaching.

Although the therapist was not associated with UNMC’s Lifestyle Enhancement Center, individuals at the center have issued a statement in response to the broadcast. UNMC names new chair of UNMC’s obstetrics/gynecology department

Carl Smith, M.D., has returned to his alma mater as chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology.

“In many ways it’s like I never left,” said Dr. Smith, who earned his medical degree at UNMC in 1978.

Cattlemen’s Ball kicks off May 31 with four-person golf scramble

A four-person golf scramble will serve as the kickoff event for the fifth annual Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska on Friday, May 31 at the new Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln. The ball will take place Saturday, June 1 at the Benes Cattle Company, 25 miles northwest of Lincoln near Valparaiso, Neb.

Women’s magazine lists UNMC/NHS surgeon among leading breast cancer specialists

James Edney, M.D., professor of surgery at UNMC and Nebraska Health System, is the only breast cancer specialist in Nebraska to be included on the list of “Top Doctors for Women” in the April issue of Ladies Home Journal.
