Inventor recognition reception May 23

UNeMed Corporation, UNMC’s technology marketing and licensing organization, and the UNMC Intellectual Property Office (IPO), will acknowledge UNMC inventors Thursday, May 23 during this year’s annual Inventors Recognition Reception.

The reception, open to all UNMC inventors, will be from 4 to 6 p.m. in the University Hospital Private Dining Room. Thursday’s reception will specifically recognize inventors on six UNMC patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office between February 2000 and December 2001.

Chicago native joins UNMC College of Pharmacy faculty

Beata Ineck, Pharm.D., likes the variety that academic pharmacy offers, and she appreciates how the UNMC College of Pharmacy treats its students as more than just numbers.

She also enjoys making a difference in the lives of primary care patients.
In Omaha, Dr. Ineck will have the opportunity to fill both roles, as the newest college faculty member will split her time between UNMC and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

A North Omaha women’s group has made a big impression in Miami. Mary Hill, founder and president of Sisters Together, returned from the Sixth Annual Community-Campus Partnerships for Health national conference with an award of excellence for a poster that highlights the collaboration between UNMC/NHS Community Partnership and Hill’s organization.

UNMC researcher says acid-reducer may improve sinus symptoms

Results of a small, preliminary study suggest that some people with chronic sinus trouble may benefit from treatment with acid-reducing medication normally prescribed to treat acid reflux.

Dr. Ramsell receives Volunteer Faculty of the Year Award for 2001

For his extraordinary role in UNMC’s educational programs, John Ramsell, M.D., has been named the first recipient of the UNMC College of Medicine’s Volunteer Faculty of the Year Award. A clinical associate professor of ophthalmology, Dr. Ramsell was formally recognized May 10 during the College of Medicine’s medical student convocation and hooding ceremony.

First AHEC director promotes health care in central Nebraska

Sarah Cunningham, Ph.D., was instrumental in bringing distance-learning opportunities to many rural schoolchildren of central Nebraska. Now, she’d like to play a role in helping children from those same areas become interested in health-care professions, so that some day, they’ll get their health education and practice in rural areas.

Dr. Cunningham is the first executive director of the Central Nebraska Area Health Education Center, the first such center in Nebraska.

Employee loyalty and satisfaction has long been an unwritten goal, but now it is etched into UNMC’s strategic plan.

Creating a campus culture that builds employee loyalty and satisfaction is the newest area of focus in UNMC’s 2002-2005 Strategic Plan, adopted May 7 by the Chancellor’s Council.

Residents see variety of patients, ailments with volunteer faculty member

At his office in Grand Island, Neb., David Colan, M.D., uses the opportunity of practicing in a small city to show internal medicine residents a broad perspective of medicine. Without the number of sub-specialists found in larger cities, Dr. Colan sees a wide variety of patients and ailments. He has been named UNMC’s Volunteer Faculty of the Month for February.
