Nursing dean earns Distinguished Educator Award from Ohio State
The distinguished career of Ada Lindsey, Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, began in 1955 when she enrolled at The Ohio State University School of Nursing. Little did she know that 47 years later, she would receive a second prestigious award from her alma mater.
In late April, Dr. Lindsey received The Ohio State University College of Nursing Alumni Society’s Mildred E. Newton Distinguished Educator Award in Columbus, Ohio, during Annual Alumni Day.

Visiting stroke expert details unique treatment involving cell infusion
A unique procedure involving the transplantation of human brain cells as a treatment for stroke was the focus of a Grand Rounds presentation Thursday afternoon at UNMC.
Lawrence Wechsler, M.D., professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, made the presentation. Dr. Wechsler is in Omaha as one of the speakers at a daylong conference Friday on acute stroke management. The conference is a collaborative event bringing together all the major hospitals in Omaha and Lincoln involved in acute stroke care.

Family of UNMC alum establishes memorial fund
The family of a well-known UNMC College of Dentistry alumnus, Doug Eversoll, D.D.S., has established an endowed fund to benefit students of the college’s orthodontics program. Dr. Eversoll, who died last June at the age of 43, had an orthodontic practice in Lincoln and a satellite clinic in York.

Researchers use microarray technology to perform gene mutation analysis in lymphoma
Researchers from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) have combined to perform the first mutation analysis using microarray technology on the ATM gene in lymphoma. The study was reported in the April 29 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

UNMC nursing student ensures combat troops have creature comforts
Neither Cheryl Teel nor her husband of 2 1/2 years knew how war would change their lives.
Cheryl Teel’s second year in school at the UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division was interrupted and her plans for a May 2004 graduation changed. Teel, a Broken Bow native, left a familiar place in January for a place in the Kuwaiti desert halfway around the world to ultimately support Operation Iraqi Freedom.
