UNMC crystallographer maps protein structures

Gloria Borgstahl, Ph.D., is interested in far more than diamonds. From her 10th floor lab in the Lied Transplant Center, the petite crystallographer analyzes crystals, typically the size of a grain of sand, to map the structure of human proteins. NHS/UNMC launch the Nebraska Stroke Center

On Jan. 6, NHS and UNMC will introduce the “Nebraska Stroke Center,” the first of its kind in Nebraska and surrounding areas. With 750,000 new strokes occurring each year and demanding new approaches to stroke treatment, there is an increasing necessity for stroke centers.

The Munroe-Meyer Institute, an affiliate of UNMC, has opened The Brace Place, an orthotics and prosthetics office in Council Bluffs. The Brace Place, located at 1705 McPherson Ave., Suite GL400, is a satellite of the main office at the Omaha medical center campus.

Three generations of medical books donated to library

Charles F. Ashby, M.D., of Geneva has donated more than 300 books — spanning three generations of Fillmore County physicians — to the UNMC McGoogan Library of Medicine. Dr. Ashby, a 1942 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, is a third-generation physician in Fillmore County.
