UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center will sponsor the 2004 Martin Luther King Commemorative Presentation on Monday, Jan. 19. The featured guest speaker will be Tony Brown, acclaimed veteran African American journalist and talk show host.

Noted stem cell scientist to speak at UNMC on Jan. 8
Irving Weissman, M.D., director of the Institute of Cancer/Stem Cell Biology and Medicine at Stanford, will speak at 12:15 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. He is the guest speaker of the Graduate Student Association.

The Team Kaos cycling team, of which UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center are title sponsors, has made a $1,500 donation to the Dave Babcook Memorial Fund. The memorial fund is used for pancreatic cancer research at the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases.

Chief medical officer outlines opportunities in rural family practice
Richard Raymond, M.D., never imagined the opportunities that would evolve from his tenure as a rural family practice physician. Today, the UNMC graduate serves as chief medical officer for the Nebraska Health and Human Services System and interim director of the agency.

Dr. Swindells to serve on world’s largest HIV clinical trials organization
Susan Swindells, M.B.B.S., Terry K. Watanabe Professor and medical director of the University of Nebraska Medical Center HIV Clinic, was elected vice-chair of the Complications Research Agenda Committee of the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group (AACTG) last month. The AACTG is the biggest HIV clinical trials network in the world.
