UNMC sends medical supplies to Afghanistan

The UNMC Bookstore has donated approximately 25 boxes of nursing and medical books, as well as lab coats and scrubs to hospitals in Afghanistan. It is the first donation being sent from UNMC to the impoverished area.

NU’s appropriation hasn’t kept pace with general fund increases

When the Nebraska general fund appropriation rose more than 12 percent in 1998-1999, the University of Nebraska’s allocation from the state increased less than 4 percent.

In fact, the University of Nebraska’s allocation increase percentage has matched or exceeded the state’s general fund growth rate in only three of the past 11 years. This article is the second in a three-part series focusing on the UNMC budget.

Visiting nurse scholar: Revolutionary changes ahead in cancer diagnosis

A nurse practitioner specializing in medical oncology told nurses and nursing faculty this week that changes in the next five to 20 years will revolutionize the way health providers think about and manage cancer diagnosis and treatment. As a result, nurses will need an improved understanding of basic sciences such as cell biology, she said.

Support group forms for victims of problem gamblers

Beginning this month, victims of problem gamblers will have an opportunity to find comfort, support and education in a confidential environment on campus. The new support group, “Voices for Victims of Problem Gamblers,” will meet every other Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in UNMC’s Wittson Hall, Room 3037. The first meeting is March 12.

Dentistry to evaluate treatment for reducing sleep apnea, snoring

Researchers at the UNMC College of Dentistry are conducting a pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of an oral device as an alternative non-invasive, less expensive treatment in reducing moderate sleep apnea and snoring. The college has received $7,000 to recruit and evaluate the device in 10 men and women, age 45 to 65.

UNMC faces next round of budget cuts

The news last Friday wasn’t good. The state’s economic forecasting board cut another $69 million from projected tax collections, meaning the state of Nebraska is faced with a $761 million budget shortfall over the next biennium. For sure, some of those reductions will be made to the University of Nebraska.

During the rest of this week, UNMC Today will present some of the basics about the budget situation at the university, how the university’s appropriation has compared with other state agencies during the past decade, and how Nebraska’s budget situation compares with other states.
