Heart walk benefits research, education
Through its annual heart walk, the American Heart Association (AHA) continues its fight to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Earlier this month, approximately 2,000 people participated in the ninth annual AHA Heart Walk, including teams from UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center and University Medical Associates.

Radio commercials spotlight UNMC’s education, outreach
UNMC will launch its spring series of radio commercials today in Omaha, Lincoln and select stations across Nebraska. The three commercials will focus on UNMC’s education and outreach missions by highlighting the College of Nursing’s Distance Learning Program, the College of Dentistry’s Dental Day and the GOODLIFE Clinic, which is operated by an interdisciplinary team of students.

American Diabetes Association to honor Dr. Maurer
The American Diabetes Association is awarding its 2004 Honor Award to UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D. Dr. Maurer will receive the award at a dinner banquet on Thursday, May 27, at Embassy Suites Downtown.

McGoogan Library remodels its special collections area
The McGoogan Library staff recently held an open house to showcase the initial changes to the eighth floor: expanding the archives into what had previously been office space, repositioning stacks and recarpeting the special collections area.

Oncologist’s editorial published in cancer journal
Jean Grem, M.D., professor of oncology and hematology at UNMC, has published an editorial in the May 19 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The editorial looks at the difficulty in studying the various regimens of adjuvant chemotherapy available for treating colorectal cancer.

Arts for Hearts Show, silent auction May 20-21 to benefit MMI
Although a number of fund-raising events benefit MMI programs, the annual Arts for Hearts Show and Silent Auction is the only event where the items for sale are hand-crafted by MMI clients. The Third Annual Arts for Hearts Show and Silent Auction will take place this week.

UNMC leadership team makes historic trek across Nebraska
It was a historic trip – two days, four speaking stops, 32 media interviews and more than 1,000 miles. In what is believed to be the largest group of University of Nebraska leaders to ever go out as a group across the state, 10 UNMC administrators piled into two vans on April 28 and 29 and went from Omaha to Scottsbluff and back on a landmark goodwill tour.
