Researcher discovers joy in teaching

Recruited as a researcher, James Turpen, Ph.D., delivered exactly two lectures to students during his first three years at UNMC. After being invited to help teach the embryology core, Dr. Turpen gained an appreciation for integrating basic science with clinical practice. Tornado awareness week, mock drill April 2

Faculty to be honored with 30-year service awards

Five UNMC faculty members will be honored for 30 years of service to UNMC at the Annual Faculty Meeting on Monday. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. An overflow room will be available in the Eppley Institute, Room 2009. The faculty members include Jeffrey Baldwin, Pharm.D., of the College of Pharmacy, as well as College of Medicine faculty Jean Deupree, Ph.D., William Gust, M.D., Michael Mann, Ph.D., and Robert Ramaley, Ph.D. See story for a short biosketch of each honored faculty member.

College of Dentistry provides free sealants to children

In an effort to prevent cavities, dental hygienists from the UNMC College of Dentistry, along with the Indian Chicano Health Center and Douglas County Health Department, last week placed free sealants on the teeth of 160 second- and third-graders at Marrs Academy School in south Omaha.

Mother, daughter inspire one another

On March 20, when UNMC medical student LaKisha Williams opened her envelope and announced she would to her medical residency in psychiatry at Louisiana State University, her mother, Cassandra Williams Smith, stood by her side. It was a sweet moment of victory that would not have been associated 26 years ago with a pregnant black teen-ager in rural Mississippi.

Dr. Booth finds rewards in teaching

When James Booth, Ph.D., was offered a teaching assistant position upon beginning his doctoral education, he was terrified at the thought of presenting lectures in front of a classroom of students. More than three decades and hundreds of lectures later, Dr. Booth is being honored with the UNMC Outstanding Teaching Award. This is the second in a three-part series on UNMC’s outstanding teachers.

Free tax preparation assistance offered to UNMC employees

Sid Magdanz is once again offering free tax preparation assistance to UNMC employees who have questions regarding their 2002 tax returns. Magdanz is available to assist UNMC employees every Tuesday through April 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Administration Center, Room 2032.

Clinical psychologist cultivates minds

Keith Allen, Ph.D., isn’t likely to give the pre-doctoral interns that he mentors a lot of answers when discussing intervention strategies for patients. Instead, the UNMC clinical psychologist seeks to cultivate the future psychologists’ minds with in-depth dialogue and thought about why specific treatments are effective.
