Library services still in demand

The growth in electronic library resources hasn’t slowed traffic at the McGoogan Library.

During the 2001-02 fiscal year, 225,716 visitors entered the McGoogan Library, and there were more than 1.7 million visitors to all University of Nebraska libraries. (Love Library at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Schmid Law Library at the NU College of Law, University Library at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Ryan Library at the University of Nebraska at Kearney).

Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska to Hold Ranch Party

The Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska has made plans to hold a Ranch Party on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the Double D Farm near Ashland. The Party will include a beef brisket barbeque; entertainment by Red Steagall, a cowboy poet and a recording artist; and an auction.

Husband of former nursing dean dies; services set for Saturday

J. Thomas Yeaworth, husband of former UNMC College of Nursing Dean Rosalee Yeaworth, died Wednesday. A graveside service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Westlawn Hillcrest Memorial Park, and will be followed by an 11 a.m. church service at Dundee Presbyterian Church.

531 students receive diplomas from UNMC

Degrees and certificates were conferred to 531 University of Nebraska Medical Center students last week during commencement ceremonies in Kearney, Lincoln and Omaha.

Employee parking structure grand opening planned

One can almost hear the huge sighs of relief echoing from the UNMC parking office.

Parking and Cashiering Services Manager Tina Spencer and assistants Kelly Weyant and Lashon George have worked hard to move UNMC/NHS employees into all available parking stalls in UNMC’s new parking structure, officially named Lot 50.

UNMC research team publishes in journal, sheds light on deadly human virus

Many theories exist about why people, mostly children, get myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle that causes mild to severe disease, including death or the need for a heart transplant. The theory of a UNMC research team is featured as the cover story in the May 15 issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

First UNMC undergraduate students place dental implants

Responding to increasing demand from Nebraska patients for dental implants, the UNMC College of Dentistry developed a program last fall to train undergraduate dental students in dental implants procedures. The college recently has had its first undergraduate students place implants in patients.

UNMC staff, children participate in Cinco de Mayo parade festivities

Editor’s note: This is a first-person account of the Cinco de Mayo parade, written by UNMC Media Specialist Walter Brooks.

Let’s be clear about something right now. As of May 3, the Cinco de Mayo parade in South Omaha has to be one of the largest parades in Nebraska. A May 4 Omaha World-Herald article stated: “Police officers estimated 20,000 people attended the parade but the people were so concentrated along several of the blocks that attendance [was] beyond estimate.”

Peter Kador, Ph.D., professor and chairman of the department of pharmaceutical sciences in the UNMC College of Pharmacy, has organized a Cataract Update Symposium for Thursday, May 29, at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.
