HIPAA celebration today

NHS, UNMC & UMA will host a celebration today (June 12) to recognize employees for the successful implementation of HIPAA. Ice cream sandwiches will be served at the celebration, which will take place from 1-4 p.m. in the courtyard south of Swanson Hall.

Third Annual Omaha Cycling Weekend June 21-22

The Third Annual NHS/UNMC Omaha Cycling Weekend will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22. The weekend will feature two competitive cycling events in the Omaha metro area. The events will benefit the University of Nebraska Foundation’s Dave Babcook Memorial Fund for pancreatic cancer research.

Internal Medicine announces annual research awards

Five University of Nebraska Medical Center researchers will receive this year’s Internal Medicine Research Awards for outstanding achievements and research accomplishments. The research awards will be presented at a special internal medicine grand rounds on Friday, June 13, at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.

Nashville physician named vice chancellor for academic affairs

A Nashville, Tenn., physician, Rubens Pamies, M.D., has been named vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNMC. Dr. Pamies is professor and chairman of the department of internal medicine at Meharry Medical College and professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

UNMC third-quarter research grants total $12 million

UNMC received $12 million in federal research grants during the third quarter of fiscal year 2002-03. The third quarter includes the months of January, February and March. Total research funding for the year is now $38.8 million – a 9 percent increase over last year’s record-breaking $35.7 million after three quarters.
