UMA Baker Place Clinic open house draws nearly 1,000 visitors

Although the UMA Health Clinic at Baker Place, 5050 Ames Ave., has been a fixture in the neighborhood for years, there were many people living in the surrounding area who, until recently, didn’t know about its services or the work of the adjacent UNMC-sponsored North Omaha Community Care Council (NOCCC). This lack of awareness was challenged in a big way on May 31, when almost 1,000 people participated in an open house at the clinic and NOCCC offices.

The UNMC College of Nursing recently acknowledged faculty excellence in teaching, research and service during its annual faculty/staff retreat. The award recipients in those three areas were Sharon Holyoke, Julia Houfek, Ph.D., and Kate Fiandt, D.N.Sc.

Schulz estate gift supports three research areas at UNMC

Lifelong farmers Ervin and Dorothy Schulz of Doniphan, Neb., bequeathed $509,000 to the University of Nebraska Foundation that creates a fund for medical research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The Schulz Medical Research Fund provides support for cancer, cardiovascular and diabetes research.

UNL educator on gay and lesbian issues to speak on campus June 24

NHS/UNMC faculty, students and staff are invited to a special presentation, titled “Rainbow at UNMC: Lessons in Gay and Lesbian Issues.” The one-hour program will begin at noon on Tuesday, June 24, at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.
Guest speaker will be D. Moritz, assistant director for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally Programs and Services at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Eye research programs’ size, quality on rise at NU

More than 30 eye researchers from the University of Nebraska gave 37 presentations at the recent annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The meeting attracted more than 10,000 investigators from around the world for a week of presentations and discussion on advancements in eye research.

HIPAA celebration today

NHS, UNMC & UMA will host a celebration today (June 12) to recognize employees for the successful implementation of HIPAA. Ice cream sandwiches will be served at the celebration, which will take place from 1-4 p.m. in the courtyard south of Swanson Hall.

Third Annual Omaha Cycling Weekend June 21-22

The Third Annual NHS/UNMC Omaha Cycling Weekend will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22. The weekend will feature two competitive cycling events in the Omaha metro area. The events will benefit the University of Nebraska Foundation’s Dave Babcook Memorial Fund for pancreatic cancer research.
