UNMC Mini-Medical School to address gaps in health care

UNMC and co-sponsors in 12 cities across Nebraska invite the public to participate in a free health educational series titled, Building Bridges to Better Health: Addressing Gaps in Health Care. The series will run on Thursdays, Nov. 6, 13 and 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (CDT). The public will learn about diabetes, cancer, infant mortality, and heart disease, while exploring how the conditions impact minority populations and community health.

Student senate elections Nov. 11-12

One thing already is known about the next UNMC Student Senate president – he’s a third-year College of Medicine student named Ryan. Now, students must decide whether Ryan Arnold or Ryan Shelstad will serve as their campus leader. The two Ryans are among a slate of candidates whose names will appear on the UNMC Student Senate election ballot on Tuesday, Nov. 11 and Wednesday Nov. 12.

What’s behind the mask? Halloween from a different perspective

For weeks now, storefronts have been decorated with jack o’lanterns, skeletons, witches and goblins. Ripe pumpkins and gourds are seen everywhere at the market. Summer is over and winter is just around the corner. Halloween is here. For others, Samhain (pronounced “SOW-in”) is the celebration of summer’s end. For those who practice the ancient traditions of Wicca (Witchcraft), this Celtic-based holiday is one of solemn beauty.

University of Nebraska on a roll with moving billboards

The University of Nebraska recently rolled out a new advertising campaign — on 18 wheels. As part of an innovative national promotion, the university has partnered with Crete Carrier Corp. to create a small fleet of ‘rolling billboards’ — that is, 53-foot semi-trailers with mural-like University of Nebraska advertising on the sides.

New nursing dean visits Kearney, Scottsbluff

In just her second week as the new dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., traveled to Scottsbluff and Kearney. Her goal was to listen to citizens; visit UNMC nursing campuses; meet with faculty, staff and students; visit with hospital leaders; and emphasize UNMC’s commitment to the state’s rural areas.
