UNMC lecturers kick off faculty exchange program
UNMC has achieved national recognition for developing formal affiliation agreements with some of the nation’s top undergraduate colleges for African American, Latino and Native American students. In October, Bruce Buehler, M.D., chairman of the department of pediatrics and director, Munroe-Meyer Institute, and Surinder Batra, Ph.D., professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology, kicked off the faculty exchange component with presentations at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga.

Nebraska scores well in bioterrorism preparedness report
Nebraska is tied for third in a report released Tuesday by Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) which graded the 50 states and the District of Columbia for bioterrorism preparedness.

Walk & Roll for Disabilities event Jan. 30
The C. Louis Meyer Foundation and the UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute will hold its first “Walk & Roll for Disabilities” on Sunday, Jan. 30 to raise money for recreational and respite services for adults with developmental disabilities.

Adolf receives Chancellor’s Gold U Award
When she’s not meeting with nursing home patients, Vicki Adolf is traveling to another long-term care facility in her red Jeep Liberty. As a nurse coordinator in UNMC’s Department of Psychiatry, Adolf logs nearly 6,000 miles a year traveling between 11 Omaha-area nursing homes and her office on the Richard Young Center campus.

UNMC students Tuesday recognized two outstanding teachers with the 2003-04 Golden Apple Award. James Booth, Ph.D., associate professor in the UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology, received the award from the Class of 2006, while the Class of 2007 posthumously recognized Michael Dalton, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy.

Understanding refugee culture crux of Ghana trip
Valda Boyd Ford will spend the New Year in the largest refugee camp in Ghana. Ford, director of UNMC’s Community and Multicultural Affairs, will spend eight weeks in the 140-acre Buduburam Refugee Camp working with Unite for Sight, an organization dedicated to health promotion and disease prevention. She leaves at the end of the month.
