There are many factors that contribute to low vision, but there is only one clinic in Nebraska that devotes a full time service to helping patients gain maximum use of their remaining vision. The Low Vision Center at UNMC is dedicated to helping patients learn how to adapt to their low vision.

Gov. Mike Johanns announced a plan Tuesday to advance Nebraska’s efforts in bioterrorism preparedness. The goal of the plan is to combine private and public funding to construct a bioterrorism preparedness facility at UNMC.

Mail Services doing best to deliver through the snow

A near-record amount of snow covers the ground in Omaha, a fact that isn’t lost on Mary Bennie or the other employees of Mail Services. “Our mobility has been limited because of the snow,” said Bennie, who manages Mail Services for UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center. “We’re doing the best that we can, but our services are dependent on how bad the weather conditions are. There will be some delays in gathering and delivering mail.”

Hypertension expert to give Feb. 5 Latta Lecture

An expert in hypertension and cholesterol lowering agents, especially in minority populations, will give Thursday’s John S. Latta Lectureship, sponsored by the UNMC College of Medicine Alumni Association. “Dr. Wright is a giant in doing longitudinal large-scale studies involving the African American population,” said Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice-chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies.

Ryan Arnold, a third-year College of Medicine student, was installed Thursday as the 2004 president of the UNMC Student Senate. He also serves as a non-voting member of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

UNMC College of Medicine Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., has appointed a 14-member search committee to identify candidates for the position of professor and chair of the department of internal medicine in UNMC’s College of Medicine. Dental consortium to boost rural access to oral health care

The UNMC College of Dentistry has partnered with state dental associations in Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, and South Dakota to form a consortium to address oral health access problems of underserved populations in rural areas. The consortium’s strong interest in the oral health of their citizens prompted them to form a partnership called Target Access: Great Plains Oral Health.
