Dental Day benefits 121 Nebraska students

Eight-year-old Cody Senyard was frightened. It was the first time he’d attended the UNMC College of Dentistry’s Dental Day and, even with his mom by his side, the Hastings boy was scared. Senyard and 120 other children from Hastings, Harvard, Norfolk and Lexington recently received oral health care from 350 dental and dental hygiene students.

Regents approve purchase of dental simulators, chairs

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents Saturday approved the purchase of new simulation lab equipment and dental chairs at the UNMC College of Dentistry for $2.5 million.

Dr. Persidsky named recipient of Gilmore award

When Yuri Persidsky, M.D., Ph.D., came to UNMC in 1994, he had an idea to develop a small animal model to study HIV in the brain. Nearly a decade later, the severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mouse model for HIV-1 infection of the brain that Dr. Persidsky developed with Howard Gendelman, M.D., has become recognized in the scientific community on several fronts.

UNMC received $9.7 million in federal research grants during the second quarter of fiscal year 2003-2004. The second quarter included the months of October, November and December.

UNMC creates Office of Post-Doctoral Education

In February 2003, Scientist journal published survey results that placed UNMC in the nation’s top 10 institutions for “Best Places to Work for Postdocs.” That reputation is about to get even better when the university opens the Office of Post-Doctoral Education – a new administrative department dedicated to the development and welfare of post-doctorate researchers.

UNMC awarded $890,000 for mantle cell lymphoma

UNMC will receive a three-year grant totaling $890,000 to help hunt for clues to cure and better treat a rare form of blood cancer, mantle cell lymphoma.

College of Nursing receives NU’s highest honor

The UNMC College of Nursing has received the University of Nebraska’s most prestigious teaching award — the 2004 University-Wide Departmental Teaching Award. The award is given in honor and recognition of a department or unit within the university system that has made a unique and significant contribution to the teaching efforts of the university.

First Multidisciplinary Genitourinary Oncology Clinic opens

A unique clinic is now available to save tremendous time and effort in the diagnosis and treatment of genitourinary cancers. The Multidisciplinary Genitourinary Oncology Clinic (MGOC) is a team of specialists from UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center who will serve patients with urinary tract cancers including kidney, bladder, prostate, penile, testicular and other rare pelvic and abdominal cancers.
