Medical response corps seeks volunteers

Medical and non-medical professionals are being sought to help strengthen Omaha and the surrounding communities in times of disaster. Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey Friday unveiled The Metropolitan Omaha Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps as a way to prepare citizens to assist in large-scale emergencies such as bioterrorism, epidemics, or natural disasters.

UNMC launches ‘I work here’ image campaign

Steve “Wess” Wessling doesn’t teach medical students, or do cancer research. Instead, he keeps the heating and air conditioning running and the power on for those who do. Wessling, a utility operator in UNMC’s facilities management, is one of six UNMC employees featured in a new image campaign that boasts “I work here…maybe you should, too.”

First-year students address intimate partner violence

Laura Donigan knows she may encounter domestic violence as a future health care professional, so the first-year medical student is arming herself with information. On March 3, Donigan and 119 other first-year medical students at UNMC watched “Jordan’s Story,” a production of the Omaha-group R.E.S.P.E.C.T.2 (Relationship Empowerment for Students, Parents, Educators and Community Through Theatre).

Fulbright scholar enhances training in Jordan

Laeth Nasir, M.D., associate professor in the department of family medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, was awarded a 2003-2004 Fulbright scholar grant. Since August 2003, Dr. Nasir has been a scholar in residence teaching and practicing family medicine at the University of Jordan where he will serve for a year. In February, he was joined by Marc Tompkins, a fourth-year medical student at UNMC, who will serve a rotation in family and internal medicine under Dr. Nasir.
