Appropriations Committee recommends half-percent cut to NU
The Legislature’s Appropriations Committee is recommending that $2 million (one-half of one percent) be trimmed from the University of Nebraska’s appropriation, as part of the committee’s economic plan to balance the biennial budget.

Two UNMC faculty members — Alison Freifeld, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine and director of the UNMC Immunocompromised Host Infectious Diseases Program, and James Armitage, M.D., Joe Shapiro Professor of Medicine and UNMC oncologist — made presentations at the recent National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s conference.

Medical response corps seeks volunteers
Medical and non-medical professionals are being sought to help strengthen Omaha and the surrounding communities in times of disaster. Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey Friday unveiled The Metropolitan Omaha Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps as a way to prepare citizens to assist in large-scale emergencies such as bioterrorism, epidemics, or natural disasters.

Discount tickets are available at $78.50 through March 19 by calling (402) 561-7578. This is a reduction of $6.50 from the normal cost of $85.

Coordinating Commission tours Durham Research Center
The Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education met Thursday on the UNMC campus, where they heard an overview of the campus’ future plans and received a firsthand look at the Durham Research Center.

UNMC launches ‘I work here’ image campaign
Steve “Wess” Wessling doesn’t teach medical students, or do cancer research. Instead, he keeps the heating and air conditioning running and the power on for those who do. Wessling, a utility operator in UNMC’s facilities management, is one of six UNMC employees featured in a new image campaign that boasts “I work here…maybe you should, too.”

Raising the caliber of nursing education in Afghanistan
Decades of secret wars and Taliban rule have decimated the level of health care professions in Afghanistan. A possible partnership between UNMC and the Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, though, may revitalize health care in the war torn country.

First-year students address intimate partner violence
Laura Donigan knows she may encounter domestic violence as a future health care professional, so the first-year medical student is arming herself with information. On March 3, Donigan and 119 other first-year medical students at UNMC watched “Jordan’s Story,” a production of the Omaha-group R.E.S.P.E.C.T.2 (Relationship Empowerment for Students, Parents, Educators and Community Through Theatre).
