Nursing alum reflects on deployment to Iraq

Capt. Jeff Schrader will never forget the soldier who risked his own life to save the life of an Iraqi girl and fellow Americans. The soldier was one of many unsung heroes Schrader, a1994 graduate of the UNMC College of Nursing, cared for last year during his seven months in Iraq as an Army nurse anesthetist.

Gene therapy being used in cystic fibrosis study

UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have been selected as one of 12 sites participating in a study using gene therapy techniques to treat cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States.

Sick Call to treat employee’s minor ailments

Effective Monday, March 29, regular UNMC employees will be eligible for Sick Call at Employee Health at The Nebraska Medical Center. Sick Call is a service that allows an employee to be seen by a healthcare provider at Employee Health and to receive a prescription or treatment as required.

Cardiologist John Windle, M.D., says serving as president of the Heartland Affiliate of the American Heart Association is professionally and personally fulfilling. He was appointed to the position last year and will serve as president through 2005.

Mini-medical school explores new disease threats

UNMC and co-sponsors in 12 cities across Nebraska invite the public to participate in a free health educational series titled, “New Disease Threats: How Science Is Responding.” The series will run on Wednesdays, April 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (CDT). Participants will learn about new disease threats, such as West Nile virus, monkey pox, SARS and mad cow disease, what health professionals and scientists are doing to combat them and what Nebraskans can do to decrease their risk of getting these diseases.

UNMC researcher studies promising nicotine vaccine

Sam Sanderson, Ph.D., knows all about serendipity. A biochemist, Dr. Sanderson was conducting some experiments several years ago to determine how certain tiny molecules called peptides interact with the immune system. One peptide surprisingly jumped out at him in the experiments.
