Cardiologist John Windle, M.D., says serving as president of the Heartland Affiliate of the American Heart Association is professionally and personally fulfilling. He was appointed to the position last year and will serve as president through 2005.

Mini-medical school explores new disease threats

UNMC and co-sponsors in 12 cities across Nebraska invite the public to participate in a free health educational series titled, “New Disease Threats: How Science Is Responding.” The series will run on Wednesdays, April 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (CDT). Participants will learn about new disease threats, such as West Nile virus, monkey pox, SARS and mad cow disease, what health professionals and scientists are doing to combat them and what Nebraskans can do to decrease their risk of getting these diseases.

Thousands of travelers flying into Omaha are becoming familiar with a new building on the city’s landscape – the Durham Research Center at UNMC. Hawkins Construction Company is showcasing the DRC in two four-by-six foot backlit signs in the north and south terminal walkways of Eppley Airport.

UNMC researcher studies promising nicotine vaccine

Sam Sanderson, Ph.D., knows all about serendipity. A biochemist, Dr. Sanderson was conducting some experiments several years ago to determine how certain tiny molecules called peptides interact with the immune system. One peptide surprisingly jumped out at him in the experiments.

Former NFL standout Jay Novacek will host the 2004 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska on Saturday, June 5, at the Upper 84 Ranch near Brady, Neb., about 20 miles east of North Platte. Country music artist Ty England will perform.

The UNMC Youth Learning Center hosted an all-day workshop on March 4 for 45 students, grades 3-6, from North Omaha’s Druid Hill Academy. The event was co-sponsored by the Heartland Red Cross in observance of National American Red Cross Awareness Month.

Medical students unveil Match Day destinations

Joel Winner lived up to his name on Match Day. The Lincoln native was all smiles Thursday when he announced he would be going to the University of Hawaii Affiliated Hospitals in Honolulu for his psychiatry residency.

On Thursday, Winner and 103 other members of the UNMC College of Medicine Class of 2004 learned where they would spend the next three to six years doing their residency training. See UNMC Today on Monday for more photos and a complete list of Match Day results.
