Aging expert to give Harman lecture on Friday

One of the world’s most-acclaimed scientists will be at UNMC on Friday, April 30, to deliver the Third Annual Denham Harman, M.D., Ph.D., Lectureship in Biomedical Gerontology. Bruce Ames, Ph.D., professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and senior research scientist at the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, will present “A Role for Supplements in Optimizing Health and Delaying Aging: The Metabolic Tune-up.”

Bicycling Club forms at UNMC; inaugural expo May 6

The newly formed UNMC Bicycling Club is hosting its Inaugural Cycling Expo from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the Durham Outpatient Center West Atrium. The expo is an opportunity for employees to learn all kinds of information regarding bicycling from professionals on the subjects.

Dr. Sorrell honored for research, education, health care

Nebraskans for Research recently honored Michael Sorrell, M.D., professor and section chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at UNMC, for his landmark contributions to research, education and health care. More than 290 community leaders attended Monday’s Tribute to Research luncheon.

AHEC Advisory Board holds semi-annual meeting at UNMC

The statewide Area Health Education Center Advisory Board members traveled across Nebraska last week to meet at UNMC a semi-annual meetings. The centers were created through federal grants as a way in which medical schools and community centers can cooperate to recruit and train health care professionals to serve in rural areas.

Maurers to receive People of Vision Award on May 4

Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., and his wife, Beverly, have won their share of individual awards over the years. The award that the Maurers will receive next month, however, is especially meaningful, as it will mark the first time they’ve been honored as a couple. The Maurers have been named as the recipients of this year’s People of Vision Award from Prevent Blindness Nebraska.

Heart Walk is Saturday, May 1

The 2004 Omaha-Metro American Heart Walk is set for Saturday, May 1, at Chalco Hills Recreation area around Wehrspann Lake. Approximately 2,000 people are expected to participate in the ninth annual event. Employees still may sign up for the event.
