CNND celebrates anniversary, merger with pharmacology

Spirits were high on Aug. 18, as UNMC’s Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders (CNND) held its bi-annual state of the center dinner at the Omaha Press Club. The dinner marked the seventh anniversary of the CNND and – for the first time – brought together members of the CNND and UNMC’s Department of Pharmacology.

UNMC’s 2004-05 budget completed

UNMC’s total operating budget for 2004-05 is $382 million, up 6 percent from the prior year. This budget funds instruction, research, public service, and support services, including facilities, information technology, and administration. UNMC-led team’s anti-malarial drug work featured in Nature

An article by UNMC College of Pharmacy scientists will be featured in today’s (Aug. 19) issue of Nature, an international weekly journal of science. In the article, lead author Jonathan Vennerstrom, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, UNMC College of Pharmacy, describes the development of an anti-malarial drug candidate, which has been lauded by the World Health Organization.

Medical center transplant program featured on NPR

Last month, National Public Radio’s “Weekend All Things Considered” ran an interview with Linda Aadland, who donated one of her kidneys to James King, a complete stranger. The two met for the first time July 24 at the annual transplant reunion held by The Nebraska Medical Center. Listen to their inspirational story.

UNMC enrolls largest number in adolescent depression study

UNMC was one of 13 clinical sites to participate in a study that found the most favorable way of treating teens suffering from major depressive disorder is via a combination of antidepressant and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Findings in the study, coordinated by Duke University Medical Center, indicate that such a combination appears the best approach to alleviating depression and reducing the level of suicidal thinking in adolescents.
