45th Street renamed Durham Research Plaza

During a brief ceremony today, 45th Street on the UNMC campus was renamed “Durham Research Plaza,” to reflect the major impact Chuck Durham and his late wife, Margre, have made on research, education and patient care at UNMC.

Basic skills instruction prepares students for rotations

After a pep talk and a few practice runs, Angie Kratochvil of Kearney successfully poked the needle into her classmate’s arm. Nearby, her classmates read electrocardiograms, sutured pig’s feet, inserted flexible nasogastric tubes in each other, and started intravenous lines. Each summer, rising third-year students in the UNMC College of Medicine spend three days learning such basic clinical skills during an intense, hands-on instructional course known as “June Term.”

Employees recognized at annual service awards

More than 300 UNMC employees were honored the evening of June 15, at the annual UNMC Service Awards Dinner. This includes employees with service of five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years during 2004. It also includes employees who have retired during the last year, as well as the Gold U award recipients for fiscal year 2003-2004.

Obesity during pregnancy threatens health of mother, fetus

The rising obesity rate in the United States is a risk to the health of pregnant women and their babies according to the March of Dimes. To help address the issue, the March of Dimes, Nebraska Chapter Wednesday announced it will take steps to educate women about the issue of obesity and the impact it has on the unborn fetus. Sportscaster and March of Dimes Trustee Greg Gumbel was at UNMC to help make the announcement.

Study shows therapeutic promise for multiple sclerosis

It’s not a cure, but it is a step in the right direction. The results of a three-year study on the effects of autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) in four patients with advanced multiple sclerosis were published recently in the journal Multiple Sclerosis.
