June 11 deemed day of mourning; UNMC offices will be closed

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., has announced that UNMC offices will be closed on Friday, June 11, in observance of a national day of mourning for former President Ronald Reagan. Friday will be considered a day of (paid) administrative leave for all leave-eligible employees.

Nebraska delegation bound for biotechnology convention

This weekend, a group of nearly 20 Nebraskans will travel to the BIO 2004 Annual International Convention, the world’s largest biotechnology event. The convention takes place June 6-9 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center with more than 16,000 biotech executives, investors, journalists, policymakers and scientists from more than 55 countries expected to attend.

UNMC volunteers screened Special Olympians

During the Special Olympics Nebraska games, students and faculty from UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions Physical Therapy Education played a major role in screening 230 athletes for the FUNfitness program. The data collected will be put into a national database to help develop training exercises for athletes, as well as track their progress.

The “Third Annual Cardiovascular Symposium: Best Practices in Cardiovascular Medicine” is especially geared for physicians in family medicine and internal medicine, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The symposium is Friday, June 4, at the Durham Research Center.

College of Dentistry takes dental day on the road

For the first time students, faculty and staff from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry will travel 400 miles, bringing its free dental clinic to children in western Nebraska. More than 100 children from Alliance and Hemingford, Neb., will receive free dental treatment and education at Dental Day VI June 4 and 5 in Alliance. Many of the children are Native American or children of migrant farm workers.

UNMC cancer specialists involved in international conference

Cancer specialists from UNMC will be among more than 25,000 participants from around the world to discuss the latest advances in cancer care, treatment, and prevention at the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The meeting will be at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La., June 5 through June 8.

UNMC research to be published in the journal Neuron

Results of a research study led by Wallace Thoreson, Ph.D., associate professor, UNMC Department of Ophthalmology and Department of Pharmacology, will be published in the current (May 27) issue of the journal Neuron. Dr. Thoreson’s research involves how people see.
