UNMC’s annual grant awards total historic $68 million

UNMC researchers ended the 2003-04 fiscal year with a record-setting annual total of $68 million in new research awards, bringing in $17.6 million in federal research grants during the fourth quarter (April, May, June).

UNMC launches updated Web design

UNMC is launching the first phase of a redesigned Web site that features a new graphic look, improved navigational features, and a home page that highlights UNMC’s mission of education, research and patient care. It also provides links to key campus areas and to its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center.

Emeritus professor, O. Max Jardon, dies

O. Max Jardon, M.D., a longtime friend and colorful colleague of the UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, died Aug. 23 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was 72. Dr. Jardon graduated from the department’s residency program in 1972 and was the second resident to complete the modern program.

Oncology team shares August Gold ‘U’ Award

Twenty years before becoming a winning medical team, Mary Mailliard and Elizabeth Reed, M.D., teamed up on the softball field. Today, the former catcher (Mailliard) and outfielder (affectionately dubbed “I don’t do fly balls” Reed) are scoring runs in the treatment of breast cancer patients.

Star of courage award shines on Kimball Lauritzen

UNMC to test new therapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

UNMC is one of four sites nationwide that is enrolling patients in a clinical trial to test a new therapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In addition to UNMC, three other medical facilities are participating in the trial: MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Stanford University. The study is funded by Human Genome Sciences, Inc.

CNND celebrates anniversary, merger with pharmacology

Spirits were high on Aug. 18, as UNMC’s Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders (CNND) held its bi-annual state of the center dinner at the Omaha Press Club. The dinner marked the seventh anniversary of the CNND and – for the first time – brought together members of the CNND and UNMC’s Department of Pharmacology.
