Ice cream social Aug. 10 to benefit school children

On Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Clarkson Cafe, you can get a hot fudge sundae with all the trimmings for $1 or a school supply donation. The supplies will go to the annual Back-2-School distribution sponsored by the Sisters Together Omaha organization.

AHEC program to receive $1.13 million today

UNMC employees who work with the RHEN Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program are invited to attend today’s 11 a.m. presentation of a $1.13 million check to UNMC from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant, which will create the Panhandle Area Health Education Center, also will provide continued support for the two Nebraska AHECs formed in 2001 in Grand Island and in 2002 in Norfolk.

Promotion benefits childhood cancer research

Debbie Knowlton of Omaha and her family are the winners of a grand prize trip to Jamaica, including air travel, hotel accommodations and meals. The trip was part of the “BK Beat Cancer for Kids” promotion, an extension of Liz’s Legacy, a fund to advance cancer research and care at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.

Building community support for breastfeeding

The Heartland Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy has launched a “Breastfeeding Welcome Here” Business Initiative. The campaign enlists local Omaha and surrounding area businesses to welcome breastfeeding mothers and babies, and indicate this by displaying a “Breastfeeding Welcome Here” decal.

Registration service available for traveling abroad

The U.S. Department of State recently announced its online Travel Registration service for U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows individuals to record information about their upcoming trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist them, in case of an emergency. This is a valuable and potentially life-saving free service that is useful whether traveling for business or personal reasons, said Sara Pirtle, UNMC coordinator of International Studies and Programs.

Grant to boost geriatric, gerontology training across the state

UNMC has received a five-year, nearly $2 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services to educate and train health professionals and faculty members across the state in geriatrics and gerontology. The grant will create the Nebraska Geriatric Education Center (NEBGEC) to improve the health care and health care outcomes of Nebraska’s vulnerable elderly population residing in rural areas, said program director Jane Potter, M.D., section chief of geriatrics and professor of internal medicine at UNMC.

Chairman of UNMC Department of Pharmacology announced

Howard Gendelman, M.D., David T. Purtilo Distinguished Chair of Pathology and Microbiology and director of the Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Diseases (CNND), has been named chairman of the department of pharmacology in the UNMC’s College of Medicine. The appointment is effective Sept. 1, according to John Gollan, M.D. Ph.D., College of Medicine dean.
