James Jenkins, an associate professor in the department of adult restorative dentistry at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln, first became aware of ‘meth mouth’ in the mid 1990s. Today, he is helping patients including Bambi Smith salvage what is left of her teeth.

Alumni honor expert in neurogastroenterology
James Christensen, M.D., never dreamed he’d become an international expert in the muscles of the stomach and intestines. In recognition of his distinguished career, Dr. Christensen is a recipient of the 2005 College of Medicine Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award.

Dr. Pratt among early subspecialists
As one of the earliest hematologists in the region, Peyton Pratt, M.D., launched the state’s shift toward medical subspecialization. During this weekend’s College of Medicine alumni reunion, the 1944 graduate is being honored with the College of Medicine Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Researchers map gene for connective tissue disease
Researchers from UNMC and the Center for Genomic Sciences at Allegheny Singer Research Institute in Pittsburgh have identified the location of a gene on the human genome that is responsible for Dupuytren’s contracture, the most common inherited connective tissue disease. The team’s discovery recently was published in the journal Clinical Genetics.

Heart transplant patient recovering well
One of the first things Deb Maeder noticed about her husband after his heart transplant was how healthy his skin looked. Mark Maeder of Papillion received the first heart transplant at The Nebraska Medical Center since 1999.

Peter J. Lennarson, M.D., and G. Matthew Longo, M.D., are among the many new faculty members on the UNMC campus. Dr. Lennarson is an assistant professor in the UNMC Section of Neurosurgery. Dr. Longo is an assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Surgery.
