UNMC nursing dean in national video
Johnson & Johnson is preparing to launch a promotional video, “Nurse Scientists: Committed to the Public Trust,” that will feature Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, and nine other nurse researchers from across the country. The 10-minute video promotes nursing research to meet the healthcare needs of the nation.

Memorial service today for Maureen Cleary
Memorial services are today for Maureen “Mo” Cleary, a former alumni director at UNMC. Cleary died Dec. 29 at her home in Estes Park, Colo., of complications from breast cancer, which was diagnosed in 2002. She was 53.

Music eases pain, anxiety after open-heart surgery
Researchers have found a potential way to reduce moderate to severe pain, and anxiety following open-heart surgery. It may be as simple as listening to music. A research team led by a UNMC College of Nursing doctoral student published the study in the November issue of Pain.

Scientist to continue multiple sclerosis research
Kalipada Pahan, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry, oral biology and pharmacology at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln, has received a five-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study potential new anti-neuroinflammatory drugs for multiple sclerosis.

World-Herald names Dr. Maurer ‘Midlander of the Year’
For being “the spark behind what may be the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s most explosive period of growth and for his efforts to make UNMC a world-class academic medical center,” UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., has been named “Midlander of the Year” for 2004 by The Omaha World-Herald.
