NU President Milliken installation celebration Jan. 26-27
“A Love of Place” is the theme of the installation of the sixth president of the University of Nebraska. James B. Milliken will be installed on Jan. 27 in Omaha, one of a number of events spanning two days, four cities, and 956 miles. Activities will include the official installation ceremony, an academic panel discussion, a celebration of the arts, public receptions, and fellowship.

Study finds reduction in urinary tract infections
About 1 million people a year contract urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to catheters, said Mark Rupp, M.D., UNMC professor of internal medicine/infectious diseases and director of the Department of Healthcare Epidemiology at The Nebraska Medical Center. In an attempt to reduce infections caused by urinary catheters, Dr. Rupp and colleagues conducted a two-year study to determine the effectiveness of a new silver alloy, hydrogel-coated urinary catheter in reducing the rate of UTIs.

Potter’s House ‘Sneak Peek’ set for Jan. 23
Those eager to get a view of this year’s Omaha Symphony ASID Designer Showhouse before the designers transform the house will have that opportunity between 1 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23. The “Sneak Peek” event is open to the general public, with a $5 contribution to the symphony payable at the door. Children under 10 will be admitted free.

Behrendt takes oath to lead UNMC Student Senate
Saying he wants to be a strong representative for the UNMC student body, third-year medical student Nick Behrendt took the oath of office on Thursday to become the next UNMC Student Senate president. The unopposed victor in November’s student elections, Behrendt also will be the UNMC student representative on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

UNMC physician sees tsunami devastation
It was a 70-degree winter day and K.C. Balaji and his family were relaxing on the sandy beaches in the Bay of Bengal, as they often do when they visit the southeastern coast of India. His 2-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son built sand castles, played ball and dodged waves as they lapped the shore. One week later, a deadly tsunami struck the tranquil beach, erasing everything in its path.

Students explore research opportunities
John Gross wandered through mountains of poster boards Thursday (Jan. 13) in search of a summer research opportunity. The Creighton University senior hopes to work in a lab after he graduates in May with a bachelor’s degree in biology. The UNMC Office of Research and Development’s fifth annual Research Fair last week was a wonderful opportunity, he said, to sample the breadth of basic and clinical research taking place on campus.
