Researchers discover unknown bacteria, name it after state

UNMC microbiologists and laboratory specialists at The Nebraska Medical Center recently accomplished something prestigious in the world of microbiology. They identified a previously unknown organism and named it nebraskense, after the state.

UNMC animal care receives AAALAC endorsement

The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC) accreditation program evaluates organizations that use animals in research, teaching or testing. Those that meet or exceed AAALAC standards are awarded accreditation. In February, the UNMC Animal Care and Use Program received a renewal of its AAALAC accreditation.

UNMC and co-sponsors in 15 cities across Nebraska invite the public to participate in a free health educational series titled, “Cancer: Discovery, Development and Delivery: From the Laboratory to the Community.” The series will run on Tuesdays, April 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (central time).

New questionnaire process awaits blood drive donors

The Red Cross Blood Drive at UNMC on Thursday, March 24, will be among the first drives in Omaha to use a new, more efficient process of questioning potential donors. The process should provide a more positive experience for donors, increasing the likelihood that they will donate blood again, said Peter Pellerito, Center for Healthy Living fitness specialist and the UNMC liaison for the blood drives.

That’s why it’s not unusual for Kruse, a nurse case manager in UNMC’s Oncology/Hematology Department, to leave her pager on after hours if she thinks a patient might need a reassuring voice or have questions related to an evening CAT scan.
