CDC director at today’s Biocontainment Unit unveiling
Gov. Dave Heineman will unveil Nebraska’s new Biocontainment Unit at The Nebraska Medical Center today, a first-of-its-kind in the nation. The governor welcomes Julie Gerberding, M.D., director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to Omaha for a tour and briefing about the new unit and the collaborative effort behind it.

Inappropriate use of computer resources leads to arrest
On Tuesday, a workstation in the McGoogan Library of Medicine computing cluster was being used to view objectionable material, which is prohibited by federal law. Following established procedures, UNMC Campus Security contacted the Omaha Police Department and an arrest was made. The individual arrested was not affiliated with UNMC.

2005 Kiewit, Scott Entrepreneurial awards announced
HKS Medical Information Systems is the 2005 winner of the Walter Scott Entrepreneurial Business Award, University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken announced Tuesday. Byers “Bud” Shaw Jr., M.D., professor and chairman of UNMC’s Department of Surgery, founded HKS Medical Information Systems in 1993 with Hubert Hickman and Paul Kenyon. The company develops, sells and implements software for hospitals to track solid organ transplant data. A four-student team from the University of Nebraska at Kearney won the Peter Kiewit Student Entrepreneurial Award.

UNMC neurologist to share stroke expertise
Since joining UNMC, Pierre Fayad, M.D., has built a new department and recruited neurology specialists. He has built programs that greatly enhanced the capabilities of UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, to help patients suffering from strokes, seizures, muscle and nerve disorders, brain cancer and degenerative disorders of the brain such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and dementia.

Breakthrough treatment for kidney, skin cancer
UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, a leading provider of cancer care in the Midwest region, is the only medical center in Nebraska and Iowa to offer PROLEUKIN® IL-2 therapy, a recombinant human Interleukin-2 (rhIL-2) for the treatment of metastatic melanoma (a type of skin cancer) and metastatic renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer).

One day in the Buduburam Refugee Camp
Valda Boyd Ford is wrapping up an eight-week, volunteer experience at the 140-acre Buduburam Refugee Camp, the largest camp in Ghana with roughly 42,000 people. Ford, director of UNMC’s Community and Multicultural Affairs, has been working with Unite for Sight, an organization dedicated to health promotion and disease prevention. Today, she outlines a “typical” day at the Buduburam Refugee Camp.
