Nurse practitioner fulfills dream in poverty-stricken Bangladesh

As a young adult, Sandra Borden knew she wanted to work overseas in a remote place. She never really dreamed of being a nurse, nor did she seriously consider nursing as a career. But nursing was her destiny. The Gibbon, Neb., woman went on to build and staff a hospital in one of the poorest and most remote parts of the world. Race team tastes success in Puerto Rico

Three broken bicycles were not enough to stop Team Kaos from experiencing success at the inaugural Tour of Puerto Rico. The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC and UMA-sponsored team recently placed four of its seven riders in the top 30, captured the “King of the Mountains” title and finished fourth of 17 squads in the team standings.

Dr. Berger earns Outstanding Teaching Award

Her mother’s diagnosis and treatment for leukemia taught Ann Berger, Ph.D., compassion for cancer patients and their families. Her father’s work-related transfers and several moves taught her resiliency and the ability to accept change as a child. Three decades as a clinical oncology nurse have allowed her to apply real-life circumstances to her teaching. On Wednesday, Dr. Berger’s work as an educator will be recognized, when she receives one of three Outstanding Teaching Awards at the Annual Faculty Meeting. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. in the Durham Research Center’s Scott auditorium.
