Rural research project has lasting impact
Not all of the 220 women from rural Nebraska enrolled in Susan Noble Walker’s research project, Wellness for Women, have met goals for incorporating healthy eating and physical activity into their lifestyle, but many have made extensive changes over the past two years.

UNMC’s Rapid Autopsy Program featured in scientific journal
UNMC’s Rapid Autopsy Program (RAP) received major acclaim this month when the Journal of Neuroimmunology carried two articles written by the UNMC RAP team. One article served as a tutorial for other institutions on what it takes to develop a RAP. The other article detailed the changes that occur in microglial brain cell function with HIV-1-associated dementia.

University accreditation process kicks off
When John Benson, M.D., reads the criteria on which UNMC’s accreditation application will be judged, he can’t help but note the similarities to UNMC’s strategic plan. Over the next 1 1/2 years, the campus will undergo a self-evaluation in hopes of receiving a full, 10-year re-accreditation.

Heart Walk surpasses 2005 goal
More than 2,200 people turned out for the 10th annual Omaha-Metro American Heart Walk on May 7 and raised more than $415,000, surpassing the 2005 goal of $375,000. This is the first year the local goal has been reach.

Dr. Reddish receives Preceptor of the Year Award
Just two years removed from pharmacy school, Joel C. Reddish, Pharm.D., knows well what students seek to gain from their clerkship experiences with practicing pharmacists.
Dr. Reddish transferred that knowledge into practice – during his first year as a preceptor – to earn the 2005 Preceptor of the Year Award.

Shats receives Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award

She sits in a seductive pose on the barstool, wearing knee-length, black, leather boots and a short skirt. Sitting next to her is a girl, in blue-jean overalls with braided pigtails and a broad smile. The photo of the two cousins is unremarkable. The story behind it is disturbing.
