UNMC focusing on growing problem of antibiotic resistance

Staphylococcus infections once associated with hospitalization, recent surgery, and residence in long-term-care facilities, now are striking healthy individuals. And the experts aren’t sure why. Complicating the rise of “staph” infections is the organism’s growing resistance to antibiotic treatment. UNMC recently formed a new research group focused on the local and national problem of staphylococcus infections.

New instrument to benefit researchers

UNMC recently bought a $400,000 BIAcore 3000 instrument to serve researchers at UNMC and beyond. “The BIAcore is like the Maserati of instruments, except it’s made in Sweden,” said Donald Johnson, Ph.D., associate professor, UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology. The instrument is mostly being used in biomedical companies with interests in biotechnology.

Midwest’s first global health conference Sept. 9-11

Two UNMC organizations that focus on international relations and health – International Studies & Programs and Student Alliance for Global Health – will host the Midwest’s first global health conference. The conference, titled, “Bridging Health Divides: Engaging in Global Health at Home and Abroad,” will be Sept. 9-11, at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 555 S. 10th St., in Omaha.
