Faculty and staff will have the opportunity on Tuesday, July 26, to learn about the recent increases in salaries and retirement benefits, as well as information on the campus’s efforts in garnering national media, a new automated system for sick and vacation leave, and changes to UNMC’s Thank ‘U’ award program.

HIPAA, the “Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996,” provides federal protection of patient health information. This HIPAA-related message is part of UNMC’s continued effort to educate employees. Today’s HIPAA message addresses what to do if you receive a misdirected fax or e-mail.

Med center hopes to regain corporate cycling title Aug. 21
Medical center employees are hoping to pedal 3,500 miles in this year’s Corporate Cycling Challenge, but need your help to meet that goal and beat the competition. The Corporate Cycling Challenge – Nebraska’s largest single day cycling event – is set for Sunday, Aug. 21. The event is a bicycle tour and not a race, so cyclists of all abilities can participate.

Gift to benefit MMI’s recreational therapy program
Doctors at the Munroe-Meyer Institute are thrilled to see Sarah Weidner leading the normal life of a 13-year-old girl. Sarah was born with “severe hydrocephalus,” a condition that causes a dangerous buildup of fluid around the brain. She wasn’t expected to survive, let alone see, hear or speak. It is in honor of this extraordinary success that Sarah’s grandfather, William Leopard of Sioux Falls, S.D., established the Sarah Weidner Grant Fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation with a donation of $100,000.

Dr. James Neff, outstanding orthopaedic surgeon, dies
James Russell Neff, M.D., an internationally recognized faculty member and orthopaedic surgeon for UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, died Tuesday at Methodist Hospital in Omaha after an extended battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Aug. 6, at Dundee Presbyterian Church, 5312 Underwood Ave.

UNMC receives grant to better diagnose lymphomas
Wing “John” Chan, M.D., professor of pathology and co-director of the Center for Lymphoma and Leukemia Research at UNMC, is principal investigator of a nearly $9 million grant awarded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute. Researchers hope the work of the grant ultimately will increase the chance of survival of lymphoma patients.

Maybank accepts senior position at Michigan State
Denise Maybank, associate to the president at the University of Nebraska since October 2003, and former director of multicultural affairs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, has accepted a position as associate vice president for student affairs and services at her alma mater, Michigan State University in East Lansing. Her last day at the University of Nebraska will be Aug. 1.

Disaster Behavioral Health Conference July 14-15
The terrorist bombings in London last week sent a chilling reminder to all of us that the threat of terrorism continues to exist. For the third consecutive year, area mental health professionals will get together to look at the psychological aspects of dealing with disasters, as more than 200 people are expected to attend the Nebraska Disaster Behavioral Health Conference on July 14-15 in downtown Omaha.
