Public Affairs expands campus news Web site

Rejda receives Chancellor’s Gold U Award

John Rejda isn’t comfortable in the spotlight. He’d much rather quietly work behind-the-scenes to resolve computer problems for those in need. That’s why being named the July recipient of the Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award is humbling, says the Omaha native, who has worked at UNMC since September 2001.

Cattlemen’s Ball raises $600,000 for Eppley Cancer Center

Officials from the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska visited UNMC on Tuesday to make a donation of historic proportions — $600,000. The funds were generated by the 2005 Cattlemen’s Ball held June 4 at the Herb Albers Feedlot near Wisner, Neb. The amount nearly triples the previous fund-raising record for the event.

UNMC involved in clinical trial to enhance bone healing

UNMC has become the fifth site in the U.S. to enter into a clinical trial with Aastrom Biosciences, Inc., to determine if special adult stem cells can help speed the healing of severe leg fractures and eliminate the need to do painful bone grafting procedures.

Graduate earns long-distance bachelor’s degree

When Sonja Belville came to Omaha in May to receive her bachelor of science degree in radiation science technology, she did something she had wanted to do for two years – see what the rest of her classmates looked like. Belville participated in UNMC’s RT to BSRT online degree completion program and did her entire two years of study a thousand miles away in Florida.

Spanish-language parenting course recognized

The South Omaha Neighborhood Association (SONA) has named the “For the Love of Family” Spanish-language parenting course as the winner of the SONA 2005 Project of Merit Award. The announcement was made in June and is a crowning achievement for the nine-year old program. The program was designed to assist Latino families who face unique challenges when raising their children in two cultures.

Jazz concert on campus July 29

Jazz vocalist Susie Thorne will perform Friday, July 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Swanson Courtyard for employees of UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center and UMA. The concert is presented through Passport Partners, a cultural partnership between UNMC, UMA, The Nebraska Medical Center and Joslyn Art Museum.
