UNMC to provide screenings, masks at Husker Harvest Days

Amid the latest farm machinery, technology, information and education at Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island Sept. 13-15, physicians from UNMC will be on hand to provide free lung disease screenings to farmers. Farmers also will receive free respirator masks that can minimize exposure to potentially hazardous materials.

Record number of students attending UNMC

A record number of students is attending the University of Nebraska Medical Center this fall, as UNMC’s enrollment topped 3,000 students for the first time. This fall, 3,002 students are enrolled at UNMC, an increase of 98 students (3.4 percent) from fall 2004.

The stories of human suffering in the Gulf Coast area have hit close to home for many in the Midlands who have family, memories and ties to the area. Counselors with the UNMC Faculty/Employee Assistance Program are available to employees who are having difficulty dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Lynell Klassen, M.D., Stokes-Shackleford Professor of Medicine and associate chief of staff for research for the Omaha Veterans Administration Medical Center, has been named chairman of UNMC’s Department of Internal Medicine, effective Oct. 1.

Gulf Coast connections – answering the call

UNMC’s Tara Kuipers is scheduled to fly to Montgomery, Ala., today where she most likely will spend one week in a shelter for people affected by the hurricane. From there, she may be sent near Mobile, Ala., or another area in the Gulf.

Cycling to work? Team Kaos offers commuting tips

As gasoline prices continue to rise, the Team Kaos Cycling Club is helping people who are turning to bicycling for their commute to work or school. The club, which is sponsored by The Nebraska Medical Center, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and University Medical Associates, is providing tips on how to start commuting by bike on its Web site, teamkaoscycling.com.

Campus attends special Joslyn event

More than 350 employees, faculty, students and family members of UNMC, University Medical Associates and The Nebraska Medical Center attended a special event at the Joslyn Art Museum on Thursday, Aug. 31. The free event, which included tours, food and music by the Johnny Kotchian Trio, was part of the Passport Partners program.
