World-famous heart surgeon on campus Oct. 5

Some believe the secret to aging well is to stay active. Two men nearing 100 years old who’ve made major impacts in medicine, and who are the epitome of aging well, will meet again Oct. 5 during a special lectureship at UNMC. World-famous heart surgeon Michael DeBakey, M.D., 97, will speak during a lectureship named in honor of the scientific achievements of UNMC’s Denham Harman, M.D., Ph.D., who soon will be 90 years old.

Book on health disparities gains national attention

A new book on health disparities, co-authored by UNMC’s Rubens Pamies, M.D., was highlighted on CNN Headline News last week. The book, “Multicultural Medicine and Health Disparities,” was unveiled last week during the Fifth Annual Primary Care and Prevention Conference in Atlanta.

Dr. Billings to retire after 40 years in nursing, education

At age 6, Judy Billings, Ph.D., knew she wanted to become a nurse, although she didn’t really know why. On Friday, the assistant dean of the UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division will retire after 40 years in nursing.

UNMC lands $1.9 million grant for new AHECs

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has awarded UNMC a $1.9 million grant to create Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in Omaha and southeastern Nebraska and to continue funding the three existing AHECs based in Grand Island, Norfolk and Scottsbluff.

Enzyme improves immunity, suppresses HIV-1 dementia

UNMC researchers have demonstrated for the first time that suppression of a particular enzyme in humans may increase immune responses against human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1), and thus decrease virus in the brain. The findings are published in the Oct. 1 issue of Blood, a prestigious journal of the American Society of Hematology.
