Enzyme improves immunity, suppresses HIV-1 dementia

UNMC researchers have demonstrated for the first time that suppression of a particular enzyme in humans may increase immune responses against human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1), and thus decrease virus in the brain. The findings are published in the Oct. 1 issue of Blood, a prestigious journal of the American Society of Hematology.

Study leads to better understanding of multiple sclerosis

It is commonly known that more women than men suffer from multiple sclerosis, lupus and thyroiditis, but researchers didn’t understand why – until now. A UNMC study appearing Friday in The Journal of Biological Chemistry reveals that the way female T cells interact with brain immune cells causes more inflammatory neurotoxic molecules capable of destroying brain myelin.

Dr. Pamies co-authors book on health disparities

Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies at UNMC, and David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., interim president of the Morehouse School of Medicine and former U.S. Surgeon General, will host a book signing ceremony today in Atlanta, Ga., for their new book, “Multicultural Medicine and Health Disparities.”

Mini-Medical School celebrates 10th anniversary

UNMC and co-sponsors in 17 communities across Nebraska invite the public to participate in a free health educational series titled, “A Decade Makes a Difference.” The series will run three Thursdays, Oct. 6, 13 and 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (central time). This fall’s Mini-Medical School, which focuses on genetics, cardiology and the brain, celebrates the 10th anniversary of the program.

National storyteller, cancer survivor to perform Sept. 22

Nationally recognized storyteller Victoria Burnett will present a one-hour performance, “Storyspiritualogy” the art of telling stories through spirituals, at noon on Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. Food will be served to the first 50 attendees.

The sixth annual “SHARING The Green” golf tournament, which benefits three clinics run by University of Nebraska Medical Center students, will take place on Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Players Club at Deer Creek, 12101 Deer Creek Drive in Omaha.
