New book explores problem of infections after surgery

With the development of such prosthetic devices as artificial joints, mechanical heart valves and cerebral-spinal fluid shunts, doctors have an almost miraculous ability to save lives and restore function. Unfortunately, one of the chief limitations of their use is infections. Mark Rupp, M.D., UNMC professor of internal medicine, is co-editor of a new textbook directed at understanding these important infections.

UNMC team top fund raiser for Memory Walk

Prasad Padala, M.D., assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry, started the team, “We Care” to represent the local medical community at this year’s Memory Walk, conducted by the Alzheimer’s Association Midlands Chapter.
The team was the top fund raiser with $2,660.

World-famous heart surgeon on campus Oct. 5

Some believe the secret to aging well is to stay active. Two men nearing 100 years old who’ve made major impacts in medicine, and who are the epitome of aging well, will meet again Oct. 5 during a special lectureship at UNMC. World-famous heart surgeon Michael DeBakey, M.D., 97, will speak during a lectureship named in honor of the scientific achievements of UNMC’s Denham Harman, M.D., Ph.D., who soon will be 90 years old.
