Employees say farewell to ITS Building

For 24 years, the Computing Services building was home to Yvette Holly and her staff. Years earlier, it was home to hundreds of orphans and children. On Friday, former tenants of the building – the Child Saving Institute and UNMC’s Information Technology Services – gathered to say goodbye to the 80-year-old building that is scheduled for demolition this fall.

UNMC Youth Learning Center student honored

While other students thought Josh Irvin was just horsing around, 11-year old Precious Moore knew he was in trouble. Her classmate was choking and trying to get someone’s attention. Moore, who had received training in the abdominal thrust procedure during one of her classes at the UNMC Youth Learning Center, used the procedure to save her friend’s life.

World-renowned surgeon talks of fate

Michael DeBakey, M.D., wanted to buy nylon. But, the Houston, Texas, department store was “fresh out of nylon,” he said. Instead, the world-renowned surgeon bought a yard of Dacron, which he fashioned into the first arterial grafts for arteries and blood vessels on his wife’s Singer sewing machine.See story for soundbites from the press conference.
