Grant to make Latino health conference a reality
A conference for health professionals that focuses on Latino health is something Lois Colburn has wanted to host for a long time. Thanks to a $30,000 grant from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals the Latino Health Conference will be held in May.

Excessive alcohol consumption can affect bone health
Terrence Donohue Jr., Ph.D., UNMC professor of internal medicine, says chronic consumption of excessive alcohol can inhibit the formation and function of new bone cells called osteoblasts. The result is decreasing new bone formation required for maintenance of bone health and healing after bone injuries.

Review on ricin poisoning published
It was after a container of ricin poison was found in a South Carolina postal facility in 2003 that Jennifer Audi, M.D., became intrigued with the toxin. The review she helped write appeared in the Nov. 9 Journal of the American Medical Association.

Robert Jensen, Ph.D., associate professor, School of Journalism, University of Texas at Austin, has written a book about skin color in American society – the unseen and unspoken privileges that are accorded simply because one has white skin. On Jan. 16, Dr. Jensen will be the guest speaker for the 2006 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday commemoration.

UNMC, hospital to fight shortage of nursing faculty
The Nebraska Medical Center has agreed to provide $25,000 a year to the UNMC College of Nursing to supplement salaries of several new faculty recruits — faculty that will teach nursing students and practice nursing.
