National Science Foundation Program Officer Chris L. Greer, Ph.D., will present at the Dec. 13 workshop on research and education federal funding opportunities. The 2 1/2 hour workshop, sponsored by the UNMC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, will be Dec. 13.

Jaw-lengthening surgery helps infant

The smile on 8-month-old Kieli Rauert is nearly as wide as her face. She gums the sky-blue trim on her “I love my grandma” bib and nibbles on her baby-soft fingers. When she turns, you notice two small pink scars on either side of her jaw. What you don’t see is how physicians at UNMC used tiny screws to lengthen Kieli’s jaw 4 centimeters – not quite the length of a large paper clip.

Bartee honored for work in state relations

Bob Bartee, UNMC executive assistant to the chancellor, is the recipient of the 2005 Marvin D. “Swede” Johnson Achievement award, one of only two state government awards presented annually by four nationally known academic organizations.

UNMC receives grant for medical, dental program

A $1.2 million grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will allow UNMC to strengthen its pipeline of students from population groups that are traditionally underrepresented in medicine and dentistry. The four-year grant enables UNMC to create a six-week enrichment program for students in Nebraska or around the nation who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, racial and ethnic groups or rural areas.

A UNMC research team has been instrumental in developing a new gene chip that will greatly enhance the ability of scientists to develop new vaccines for AIDS, the Avian flu and for possible bioterrorism agents.
