Student overcomes hurdles, completes nursing degree

The hurdles Jorge Juarez faced could have made him give up his goal of being a nurse.
Instead, he’s graduating today with the first class of UNMC College of Nursing’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing program.

Nurse earns doctoral degree at 53

Mary Filipi, Ph.D., has worked in almost every area of nursing – medical surgical, recovery room, emergency room and coronary care. She’s worked in labor and delivery and family practice and as a school nurse. But, today, the 53-year-old self-proclaimed “late bloomer” is graduating with a doctoral degree in neuroscience.
