Swarts goes the distance for UNMC, earns Gold U

It’s been his longest — and most rewarding — race. For the past 32 years, Keith Swarts has gone the distance to help propel UNMC into the world’s elite academic health science centers. He has received this month’s Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award for his steadfast work and dedication.

Dr. Singh receives Gilmore Award for cancer research

Cancer. Just hearing the word can strike fear in people’s hearts. And it’s been the hope of many a researcher to find its cure. Rakesh Singh, Ph.D., is one of those researchers. On Friday, he’ll receive the 2006 Joseph P. Gilmore Outstanding Investigator Award for his research in tumor metastasis and angiogenesis.

Educating women on heart disease

Heart disease develops gradually and can start at a young age. On April 5, the UNMC Office of Community and Multicultural Affairs will host the “Heart and Soul Red Dress Event” at the Scott Conference Center to help women in the Omaha metropolitan area fight heart disease, which kills one in three.

Chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery named

Michael Miloro, D.M.D., M.D., has been named the Leon F. Davis, D.D.S., M.D., Distinguished Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UNMC. It is a unique honor nationally. Out of 105 programs, less than a dozen oral and maxillofacial surgery chairs exist in the country.

The UNMC College of Nursing held induction ceremonies across the state Feb. 26, to recognize 148 new nursing students as they committed to academic integrity and begin assimilating the values and behaviors of the professional nurse.
