It’s difficult to see germs when you sneeze – until you’ve met Dr. Knows. On Wednesday, 65 third-graders from Fontanelle Elementary saw first-hand how germs spread after the giant puppet sneezed colored confetti out of his nose.

Cancer researchers have discovered that metabolites of natural estrogens can react with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) to cause specific damage that initiates the series of events leading to breast, prostate and other human cancers. UNMC researchers are part of the discovery team.

Accelerated bachelor’s degree in nursing launched

The UNMC College of Nursing, with support from Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, will launch an Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing program. The college will admit a class of 10 students in January 2007 at the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff. The application deadline for those interested in applying is June 30.

Ford to receive international volunteer award

Valda Boyd Ford, director of UNMC’s Community and Multicultural Affairs, will receive the 2006 Unite For Sight International Volunteer of the Year Award. She was selected from more than 4,000 volunteers worldwide who served the organization last year.
