14 UNMC physicians among America’s Top Doctors
Fourteen of almost 20 Nebraska physicians listed in the fifth edition of the “America’s Top Doctors” book are UNMC faculty members. Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publishes the book to help consumers find a good physician.

Durham Western Museum to open three new exhibits
On May 27, the Durham Western Heritage Museum will open three temporary exhibits in the Velde Gallery of American History. Museum officials say all lend themselves to a great family outing. The museum will be closed May 29 for Memorial Day.

New center to study arthritis outcomes
UNMC announced today that it will establish a new center to better understand the epidemiology of arthritis and to better analyze the determinants which predict outcomes for arthritis sufferers. Called the Ruth and Bill Scott Center for Outcomes Research, the center is expected to open this fall in Poynter Hall.

Continuing Education receives four-year re-accreditation
The UNMC Center for Continuing Education has received a four-year re-accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through March 2010. Preparation for re-accreditation began in early 2005 with a comprehensive self-study submitted last September and a site visit last November.

Blackboard unavailable June 1-2 due to updates
Blackboard will be unavailable June 1-2 so the new version of the software can be installed. The upgrade is required by Blackboard to maintain the manufacturer’s support of the product.

Power to End Stroke Campaign launched
It happened to Coretta Scott King, Luther Vandross and most recently to baseball player Kirby Puckett. And it may happen to you – a stroke. Blacks are almost twice as likely to have a stroke as whites, and about 100,000 African Americans will suffer from one this year. That’s why Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNMC, and others are teaming up with the American Stroke Association this month to launch the Power to End Stroke campaign in Omaha.

UNMC’s annual Family Medicine Board Review Course is a gem among practitioners. Jeffrey Susman, M.D., chairman of the family medicine department at the University of Cincinnati, says it is probably the “nation’s best known, best loved course.”

Tribute sculpture depicts human caring
The Tribute to Caregivers Plaza will be dedicated with a ceremony open to employees and the community Tuesday, May 23, at 1 p.m. Learn more about artist John Lajba’s bronze sculpture that will sit in the plaza on the east side of the Hixson Lied Center.
