Rural physicians share characteristics

It is well known that there is a shortage of physicians serving rural communities in this country. What Paul Paulman, M.D., wants to know is what makes family physicians currently practicing in rural areas successful?The results of his qualitative study into this question were recently published in the spring 2006 issue of The Journal of Rural Health.

The pioneering research of Eleanor Rogan, Ph.D., professor in the Eppley Institute, has earned her the 2006 Linus Pauling Award for Functional Medicine. The award is given for research that is changing the thinking about a biomedical problem.

Fourteen of almost 20 Nebraska physicians listed in the fifth edition of the “America’s Top Doctors” book are UNMC faculty members. Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publishes the book to help consumers find a good physician.

Tribute to Caregivers Plaza dedicated

A 13-foot sculpture that conveys the compassionate touch of a caregiver stands at the center of the Tribute to Caregivers Plaza. The plaza, built as a peaceful garden meant for reflection, was dedicated Tuesday on the east side of the Hixson Lied Center, just south of Clarkson Tower.

Durham Western Museum to open three new exhibits

On May 27, the Durham Western Heritage Museum will open three temporary exhibits in the Velde Gallery of American History. Museum officials say all lend themselves to a great family outing. The museum will be closed May 29 for Memorial Day.

New center to study arthritis outcomes

UNMC announced today that it will establish a new center to better understand the epidemiology of arthritis and to better analyze the determinants which predict outcomes for arthritis sufferers. Called the Ruth and Bill Scott Center for Outcomes Research, the center is expected to open this fall in Poynter Hall.
